Anti-dandruff shampoo:
5 products that help against dandruff

Dandruff is not only unsightly, but also annoying.

They are visible as small white dots or yellowish deposits on the shoulders or hairline. It becomes unpleasant when additional complaints occur, such as scalp itching or redness.

Fortunately, they can be combated well with an anti-dandruff shampoo.

With so many products on the market, it is often difficult to find the right product for you and your scalp. We reveal what is important when choosing and how you can recognise your dandruff type..

Why does dandruff develop?

The fact that the skin renews itself and sheds tiny flakes invisible to the human eye as part of the physiologically normal regeneration is quite normal to begin with.

Like the skin on the rest of our body, the scalp also regenerates. The uppermost, horny skin cells are shed in the process.

If this process occurs more frequently on the scalp and white or slightly yellowish flakes become visible, we speak of dandruff - also called squama. This is a sign that the scalp is out of balance.

Oily dandruff is often caused by an increased occurrence of yeast fungi. If the scalp lacks moisture, on the other hand, dry dandruff occurs.

What dandruff do I have?

Oily dandruff occurs with a rather oily scalp with increased sebum production.

In this oily environment, the yeast fungus Malassezia furfur feels particularly comfortable and can proliferate strongly.

Although Malassezia furfur is part of the normal skin flora, it can promote the formation of oily dandruff if there is an overpopulation. Oily dandruff tends to be yellowish, oily and usually clearly visible due to its size. Due to their texture, they almost seem to stick to the hair or scalp.

Dry dandruff, on the other hand, is smaller, white and likes to trickle onto the shoulders.

The trigger is a dry scalp.

Common causes of a dry scalp can be an individual predisposition to dry skin, a dry climate, heating air in winter or overly aggressive hair care products.

If there are additional factors associated with either type of dandruff, or if you are suffering too much, you should consult a doctor to rule out a medical cause for the dandruff.

What helps against Dandruff?

Both types of dandruff - dry and oily dandruff - can usually be combated very well with the regular use of an anti-dandruff shampoo.

With special active ingredients, anti-dandruff shampoos loosen the rejected skin cells from the scalp and hair, bring the scalp back into its natural balance and thus prevent the formation of new dandruff.

Anti-dandruff active ingredients against oily dandruff

To get oily dandruff under control, the sebum production of the scalp must be regulated. At the same time, the spread of fungal cultures should be prevented and reduced by antimicrobial properties.

When choosing an anti-dandruff shampoo, you should pay particular attention to the following ingredients:

  • Piroctone Olamine: The ethanolamine salt of a 2-pyridone derivative has fungicidal and antibacterial effects and is particularly effective against the yeast fungus Malassezia furfur.
  • Fumaric acid: Fumaric acid is an active ingredient that occurs naturally in plants such as fumitory. It helps to normalise the shedding of skin flakes.
  • Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is originally an extract of willow bark. In cosmetic products, salicylic acid has an antibacterial and dandruff-removing effect.
  • Zinc pyrithione: the zinc salt has an antifungal effect and can be used effectively against fungal infections of the scalp.

Anti-dandruff active ingredients against dry dandruff

To rebalance the scalp in dry dandruff, moisture and care must be returned to it. It should be cleaned particularly gently. Most of the ingredients of dandruff shampoos against oily dandruff are too aggressive.

Therefore, they are unsuitable for the treatment of dry dandruff. The following active ingredients can help with a dry scalp:

  • Panthenol: the provitamin B5 or dexpanthenol increases the moisture of the skin and thus strengthens the skin barrier. Itching and feelings of dryness are reduced.
  • Sugar surfactants: Sugar surfactants are mild, washing-active substances that have a gentle cleansing effect. They are therefore particularly suitable for dry and sensitive scalps.
  • Bisabolol: the active ingredient from camomile can reduce minor irritations and soothe the skin.
  • Sage extract: the extracts from the sage plant help to restore the balance of the scalp
